Restoring or Replacing Your Roof – what’s the Difference?

Is the roof on your home getting a bit tired? Or has it been damaged in a storm? 

A bit like an older car, at some stage the performance of the roof on your home will come to an end and you’ll have to weigh up the economic viability of pouring money into roof repair versus replacing it with a new roof. 

At least with your home, a new roof adds value to the property. That’s more than can be said for an aging car!

We get it. As we discussed in our blog Your Gutter Health Matters, it’s likely that you’re not spending too much time thinking about your roof. It’s usually only when it becomes a problem. For example, the gutters are blocked or the roof is damaged in some way.

But when you think about it, the roof on your family home is the first line of defence against the elements. It protects you from the rain, the wind, the sun and falling debris such as branches. So when the inevitable time comes, how do you decide whether to do roof restoration or replacement?

What does it mean to ‘restore’ your roof? 

As  the name suggests, restoration of the roof on your home means that the original materials stay put and are treated to a deep clean, making repairs as necessary and then recoating the roof.

Depending on the size, age and condition of your roof, this is often a less expensive option and, therefore, most people are drawn to it. But keep in mind that it’s still your original roof and unless it’s in fundamentally good condition, this can be like putting lipstick on a pig.

What does replacing your roof involve?

For a roof replacement roofing contractors completely remove all the old materials on your roof and replace them with new ones. This is also a great opportunity to make a decision on which materials you’ll use for your new roof.
